First steps Based on the surrounding water birds my guess is that this is a Blacksmith Plover chick. During the dry season the water springs are small in the Serengeti, thus I imagine it is in a very vulnerable phase of its life right now. The Blacksmith Lapwing or Blacksmith Plover occurs commonly from Kenya through central Tanzania to southern and southwestern Africa. The vernacular name derives from the repeated metallic 'tink, tink, tink' alarm call, which suggests a blacksmith's hammer striking an anvil.
