Red Admiral, Vanessa atalanta, on Hedera helix, common ivy.
Hedera helix, the common Ivy is a magnet for Butterflies, Bees and Hover Flies when there are not many flowers around anymore in September and October. Took the picture right in the front of my house. The Ivy only produces flowers when it has a certain age.

The Red Admiral is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The Red Admiral has a 45–50 mm wing span. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.
