
The Chapel hollow
One of the many ancient giant trees named the "Chapel" in the Styx valley.
They are the tallest trees in the Southern Hemisphere and worldwide are topped only by California’s redwoods.
Back in 2003 an 84 metre tree named "Gandalf's Staff" made international headlines when protestors set up a Global Rescue Station high among its branches, camping up there for five months and setting a world record for the highest tree-sit in a courageous act that ultimately saved the tree from chainsaws.
Unfortunately there is quite a bit of logging in the area and we are not sure how much longer these ancient giants will remain. This area of the valley has fortunately been untouched by bushfires for hundreds of years.
