5 month old Harpy Chick exercising its wings
Note the claws and the beak, the key weapons of the Harpy. The adults spend a lot of time in emergent canopy trees, like the Brazil nut, the Kapok and the Angelim tree providing them with the perfect opportunity to spot primates either in the emergent canopy or the understorey canopy, where they will swoop and kill by gripping the head and the claw will normally pierce the skull. Unfortunately this sitting in the open allows anyone with a grudge against the Harpy to walk up and shoot them, very easily. I will add 3 or 4 more photos and a short film later.
The Harpy Eagle, sometimes known as the American Harpy Eagle, is a Neotropical species of eagle. It is the largest and most powerful raptor found in the Americas, and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world. It usually inhabits tropical lowland rainforests in the upper canopy layer.
