Three Rock Hyraxes, Serengeti, Tanzania We just arrived at our camp in the middle of the bush in Central Serengeti. Right behind our tent was a "kopje" with these Rock Hyrax on the lookout. I had no idea what they were, but we've seen them a lot in the days to come. They're amusing to watch, very active and vocal. Fun fact: the closest living relative is the elephant. The rock hyrax or rock badger is one of the four living species of the order Hyracoidea, and the only living species in the genus "Procavia". Like all hyraxes, it is a medium-sized terrestrial mammal, superficially resembling a guinea pig with short ears and tail.
