Large Tommy herd in Serengeti NP, Tanzania
Only a minute after driving through the Serengeti NP gate, we were overwhelmed once again by the amazing numbers of mammals to be found in Tanzania. This is a large herd of Thomson's gazelles, with at least one Topi included.
The Thomson's gazelle is one of the best-known gazelles. It is named after explorer Joseph Thomson and is sometimes referred to as a "tommie". Thomson's gazelles can be found in numbers exceeding 500 thousand in Africa and are recognized as the most common type of gazelle in East Africa.
