The day after my serendipitous encounter with his Barred relative, I went out again and decided to make my own luck. I found a suitable stretch of path and played a bit of playback. Soon enough, I could hear him calling back, and indeed it sounded like he was coming closer. However, he was not nearly as cooperative as the BFF had been, and while he came quite close, he would pick hidden perches, only allowing me brief glimpses as he flew from one perch to the next. Finally, he found one that he seemed to like and stayed there for a while, calling the whole time. That gave me enough time to get closer and finally get a snap of him perched!
Compared to the other species, note the bright white eyes and reddish facial skin (vs brown eyes and yellow skin).
Beautiful, beautiful birds. Two down, three to go (plus 2 other species that don't occur in Peru)! Posted 3 years ago
