  1. The channel-bill is such an interesting species, with massive variation across its range (which I expect will end up getting split). In most of Amazonian Peru, it looks like a carbon copy of the larger White-throated toucan, except for their strikingly different calls (the White-throat makes incredibly loud yelps, while the Channel-bill croaks like a jay). As a result, I'd never had a confirmed sighting of Channel-bill in Peru, until now! I was also incredibly lucky that this bird decided to come down to feed in this low palm tree maybe fifteen meters from me! It also helps that in southeastern Peru, you can tell the two toucans apart visually, because the base of the Channel-bill's is yellow, while it's blue in the White-throat. Posted 3 years ago

The Channel-billed Toucan is a near-passerine bird which breeds in Trinidad and in tropical South America as far south as southern Brazil and central Bolivia.
