A Juvenile Falco columbarius suckleyi or Black Merlin. This juvenile is waiting for one of its parents to return from a hunting foray across Whaletown Bay. When nearly home the juvenile will noisily join its parent and fly to their perch. F.c.suckleyi is the Merlin that inhabits the Pacific coast of North America. I finally have managed to photograph this bird. The parents have nested nearby for many years and are a common sight for us although classified as “uncommon” in most birding references. The Merlin is a small species of falcon from the Northern Hemisphere. A bird of prey once known colloquially as a Pigeon Hawk in North America, the Merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic; some migrate to subtropical and northern tropical regions in winter.
