  1. One of the highlights of my time in the southern lowlands!
We walked about an hour and a half through the forest to get to the edge of this small black water lake, and quickly spotted a couple of heads peaking out of the water about 50 meters away. Unsurprisingly, they spotted us as well but, amazingly, slowly swam towards us, until they were less than 10 meters away. Their massive heads and powerful teeth really make them look more like aquatic jaguars than relatives of our common little otters, an effect rather spoiled by the funny sneezing sounds they would occasionally make. Then they slowly swam a bit farther away, and one got out onto this trunk to check us out, which really revealed how big they are (1.7 meters in length). After a couple minutes, their curiosity satisfied, they swam away towards the other end of the lake and vanished.

      1. I was in Los Llanos at Hato El Cedral, Apure state, Venezuela. A magical place - Saw Puma on a night ride but also orinoco crocodile + many other wonderful creatures - giant anteater, & caiman making faraday waves at a distance of about 10 metres. Oh & the day after the night ride - the inside of the car had many insect eggs laid on the windscreen. I've never seen as much bio-luminescence as when out that night crossing the Llanos!!
