  1. Very comical and adorable! I love watching baby birds. Are those round things with the tops cut off gourds? I put stickers on my windows to prevent collisions as well, and yet the babies still crash into the windows. Last spring, one bird crashed so hard that it was unconscious. I picked it up and put it in an open box on my deck until it could recover and fly away. Posted 15 days ago
    1. Forgive my ignorance (so much to forgive, so little time) but I don't know what a 'gourd' is? Posted 15 days ago, modified 15 days ago
      1. Sorry! Gourds are fruits that you can dry and hollow out. They make awesome bird houses and feeders.

        As a bird feeder:

Here's a gourd that I made for use as a bird house:

        1. D'oh me!

No, they are hollowed out coconut shells, into which I put the monkey nuts.

The great spotted woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker with pied black and white plumage and a red patch on the lower belly. Males and young birds also have red markings on the neck or head. This species is found across the Palearctic including parts of North Africa. Across most of its range it is resident, but in the north some will migrate if the conifer cone crop fails.
