  1. That lovely wader had eluded me for a while, and I knew Paracas was my best shot to see one. After a fruitless morning of searching, I finally found a couple, hanging out with some turnstones on a fishing boat. They were very distant, and I almost payed a fisherman to just ferry out me out in order to get closer. Instead I wandered around the bay a bit more and eventually found several that were significantly closer, foraging on some rocks behind a cluster of crowded touristy restaurants. I hopped from rock to rock in order to get a bit closer and then just sat down to wait. Over the course of an hour, I was able to watch them, along with several other wader species, foraging along the rocks and playing a game of tag with the waves. My luck payed off as they got closer, completely unperturbed by my presence and eventually spent a while foraging on the rock right in front of me, maybe 3 meters away, allowing me to take better shots than I could have dreamed of! The surfbird (Calidris virgata) is a small stocky wader in the family Scolopacidae. It was once considered to be allied to the turnstones, and placed in the monotypic genus Aphriza, but is now placed in the genus Calidris.
