American Witch-hazel Fruits- Hamamelis virginiana
These are the fruits/seed pods of witch hazel. They stay on the branches for an entire year (since the flowers were pollinated). They eventually pop in the autumn, scattering two seeds up to 45 feet away. The seeds will remain on the ground for a couple years before germinating. The popping fruits are actually audible!
Habitat: Mixed forest

"Hamamelis virginiana", known as common or American witch-hazel, is a species of witch-hazel native to eastern North America, from Nova Scotia west to Minnesota, and south to central Florida to eastern Texas.
