1. How big is a large mosquito? Posted 3 years ago
    1. Well, comparatively, this species is not actually large. But, it's larger than other species in my area that have a similar appearance. A truly large mosquito would be one in the genus Toxorhynchites, which can get to ~ 20 mm in length. Thankfully, they don't suck blood. In the US, we have Psorophora sp., the biggest of which can be up to ~20 mm and bite voraciously. For a small mosquito, we have Uranotaenia sapphirina (may favorite bc it has shiny, blue scales), which only measures ~2 mm long.

      Toxorhychites:
Elephant Mosquito - Toxorhynchites rutilus Very large, pretty mosquito. The adults only feed on nectar, not blood. The larvae are predacious and also cannibalistic.
Psorophora:
Gallinipper - Psorophora ciliata This particular mosquito was gigantic - about 20 mm long with its legs!! Gallinippers are one of the largest mosquitoes in the United States. Males and females feed on nectar, while only females seek bloodmeals with large mammals being their preferred hosts. Females bloodfeed day and night and are able to bite through heavy clothing!

The word "gallinipper" originated as a vernacular term in the southeastern U.S. referring to "a large mosquito or other insect that has a painful bite or sting".
Uranotaenia:
Mosquito - Uranotaenia sapphirina My favorite mosquito! It's tiny and blue!

It's a tiny, mostly dark mosquito with a blunt abdomen. The proboscis widens distally. The scutum and scutellum have iridescent blue scales, and the wings have a long line of iridescent blue scales on the basal two-thirds of the 5th vein.
1. Oh, and the largest mosquito in the world is Toxorhynchites speciosus, which lives in Aus, and reaches ~38 mm long! But, they don't bite.
