Himantoglossum comperianum
2 years ago, Himantoglossum comperianum was discovered for the first time ever in Israel. when we arrived to see it, it was already mostly withered, only the last flower still had color.
last year we visited that location - and the leaves didn't even come out...
but good things come to those who have patience, and today we came back to visit this rare orchid, and found it blooming beautifully! Hurray!!!
Himantoglossum comperianum is an Orchid, first described at Crimea peninsula in th 19th century. known from Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon - and now also Israel. the bulbs were used to prepare the traditional turkish Sah'leb drink, making this orchid rare and endangered everywhere it was found. the flower has 4 narrow "tongues" coming down, giving it a unique look.

Himantoglossum comperianum is a rare orchid that was only discovered to grow in Israel two years ago. It can also be found in the Crimea, the Middle East, and on some of the Aegean Islands. But, nowhere is this beauty common. In fact, it is endangered everywhere that it grows. {Photo credit; Yael Orgad, Israel} #JungleDragon #himantoglossumcomperianum
