  1. These guys are the main reason I traveled to Arequipa! They mostly breed in Bolivia but they disperse after breeding, and this is pretty much the only place you can see them in Peru. I was a bit early in the season, but fortunately it had rained before I came and a good number of them had already arrived at Salinas.
My guide and I spent several hours with them, getting nearly blinded by the sky's reflection on the water and the salty mist that the wind blew off the water's top, but it was absolutely worth it, as we were the only humans for kilometers around, with these birds that are both stunningly beautiful and unbelievably goofy-looking.
Another advantage of being there early in the season is that some of them were still in breeding plumage: check out that purple breast! Our european flamingos never look like that!
(Also note the one outlier, one Chilean Flamingo on the center left, it's the one with the gray legs and red knees! Leg color is the easiest way to tell apart the 3 flamingo species that occur in Peru)

    1. I'm so happy to hear you were successful in your goal. Also cool to hear about the increasingly rare solitude you experienced, that must have been so memorable. Finally, I would have never spotted the outlier, that makes the already awesome photo even cooler. Posted 3 years ago

The Andean flamingo is a species of flamingo native to the Andes mountains of South America. Until 2014, it was classified in genus "Phoenicopterus". It is closely related to James's flamingo, and the two make up the genus "Phoenicoparrus". The Chilean flamingo, Andean flamingo, and James' flamingo are all sympatric, and all live in colonies.
