  1. Probably one of the prettiest shorebirds in the world and a proper birder's bird, this dapper little fellow is found in glacier-fed bogs in the Andes, where they forage among cushion plants. This one and its mate were seen at 4800 meters, literally the elevation of western Europe's highest point!
As an extra bonus, this was my 1000th bird species for Peru :)

    1. So pretty that it's a sandpiper-plover, like they couldn't decide. Respect for the effort and this astonishing result, what a bird! And of course congrats on the 1K! Posted 3 years ago
      1. Indeed, I think they weren't sure where to stick in the family tree for a while haha
(In the end, turns out it belongs with the plovers)

The diademed sandpiper-plover or diademed plover is a species of bird in the plover family Charadriidae. It is monotypic within the genus "Phegornis". The relationship of this species to other plovers is uncertain, a 2010 study suggested it may be related to the Australian dotterels.
