Scarred Zebra on Ngorongoro crater floor I don't know the story of this Zebra, but likely it is one of hardship judged by its many scars. It lives on the Ngorongoro crater floor, where it faces numerous enemies in a surrounding where there is no place to hide; the crater floor is very flat. I have this photo printed poster-size in our living room. It reminds me of a few things when I look at it. Above all, it puts my own little sufferings in perspective, them being petty complaints. 1. Crater overview:

Ngorongoro Crater mega panorama This is one of the world's most famous wild landscapes. The Ngorongoro crater is part of the larger Ngorongoro conservation area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of Africa's 7 natural wonders. Some refer to it as nature's greatest Amphitheatre or Noah's Arc. The area is also known as the birth place of humanity.<br />

The crater is the largest collapsed volcano cone in the world. The remaining crater is truly huge. In this photo I am standing on one edge of the crater, overlooking a crater inner field of 17 by 21 kilometers. Not only is this a geological marvel, it is also a wildlife marvel. Most of the animals living on the crater floor are somewhat stuck there. Birds and courageous mammals can escape, but most feel trapped. Although the crater floor is huge, it is also extremely flat. This brings some spectacular wildlife dynamics: predators and prey have few places to hide and are in constant eye contact. Try living, sleeping or raising young ones in such a place of constant threat. Africa,Geotagged,Ngorongoro,Ngorongoro Crater,Serengeti area,Tanzania

  2. Good grief, it really has been through it, poor thing. You are right Ferdy, most humans have it pretty easy but for prey animals such as zebra, every day is a battle just to stay alive. Zebras are pretty evil to each other as well, I have seen footage of a zebra kicking another to death. In this photo, I think this shows just how tough they can be and it has obviously won many battles ......and many predators have gone hungry. Posted 11 years ago
    1. So true. I used to didn't think much of Zebras but after this trip I find them remarkable: tough, courageous, heroes. Posted 11 years ago, modified 11 years ago

The plains zebra, also known as the common zebra, is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra. Its range is fragmented, but spans much of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. Six subspecies have been recognised including the extinct quagga which was thought to be a separate species.
