Sugar Cane
Sugar cane is the major agricultural crop grown within the Great Barrier Reef's catchments and Australia is the second largest export of raw sugar in the world.About 3,000 farms sprawl over 360,000 hectares, some of them dating back more than100 years and there are over 20 varieties. But it’s only been in recent times that we have learnt the impact that sugar production is having on the Reef's water quality.
Fertilisers are one of the major sources of nutrients entering the Reef. Fine sediments and the pesticides used on coastal floodplains also threaten water quality.

"Saccharum officinarum" is a large, strong-growing species of grass in the genus "Saccharum". Its stout stalks are rich in sucrose, a simple sugar which accumulates in the stalk internodes. It originated in New Guinea, and is now cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries worldwide for the production of sugar, ethanol and other products.
