Orophus tessellatus - pink edition, Los Cedros Reserve, Ecuador This unusual vivid pink individual likely is a result of Erythrism, a genetic mutation causing red pigmentation. In some katydid species, it may affect 1 in 500 individuals. For this species, I can find several examples so it may not be very rare. Given that this is a false leaf katydid, it does not seem like an advantage to stand out this much. Then again, it had survived thus far.
