Dalmatian Pelicans hunting One of my favourite images from Lake Kerkini, Greece. While I got many more wow shots of the pelicans while we were on photo sessions with local fishermen, this one is a "natural" one. I was sitting for hours at the lake shore, just observing birds. The longer I was there the more patterns in their behaviour I noticed. There were common coots and when one of them caught a fish, the black headed gulls bullied it until it dropped the fish and the gulls stole it. Quite fun to watch. Then there were many, more honest black headed gulls who were catching their meals in honorable way, not stealing. It was fascinating and very hard to photograph when they dove into the water and emerged with a fish. And lastly, the most rewarding scene was watching dalmatian pelicans hunt fish in their natural way. What a team work! They slowly pushed the fish in more shallow waters, working synchronised as a group. Then suddenly they all dove in for a catch. And so did the greater cormorants and again black headed gulls. I think everyone was more successful with this team effort! It was funny to see the gulls landing and resting on pelicans' backs :) Dalmatian Pelican,Geotagged,Greece,Pelecanus crispus,Winter, balkans, birds, dalmatian pelican, greece, kerkini, lake, national park, nature, pelecanus crispus, pelicans, travel, winter Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

The Dalmatian Pelican is a member of the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe to India and China in swamps and shallow lakes. The nest is a crude heap of vegetation.
