Alert I was watching these cow elk for a few minutes when something else got their attention. I never did see what it was; I was hoping some magnificent carnivore like a bear or a pack of wolves would enter the scene, but I never did see what set the elk off. The elk or wapiti is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and Eastern Asia.
