Black-headed parrot - closeup, Sani Lodge, Ecuador

For some reason, this parrot is not even mentioned in the Ecuador birds app, although occasional reports exist.

    How odd, I've got the digital version of the Ridgely and Greenfield guide and for this species they say "fairly common and conspicuous in lowlands of east".

        Unfortunately, the same is true of Ridgely & Greenfield. If you haven't tried them, the country packs that you can download for free on the Merlin app are really good, though they'll typically be missing a few dozen really rare species from a given country, and their maps are not terribly accurate. But the photos can be a very good complement to poor illustrations, and the recordings can be quite useful too (for instance, they're noticeably louder than the ones on the Peru birds app).
