After a long winter experimenting with bird photography and landscape photography I've came back to my favorite subject, insects! Here is my first insect photo of 2022.

  1. Opening the season early, nice!

    PS: a crane fly is not a mosquito. What is interesting though is that assuming this species ID is correct, it's the first winter crane fly, family Trichoceridae, on JungleDragon.

    1. Thanks for the correction Ferdy, my browser translated winter crane fly into Portuguese as winter mosquito. I hope the ID is correct, if not I hope someone can correct it ^_^ Posted 3 years ago
      1. No problem, I think the ID is correct. My understanding is that most species that people call a "mosquito" are midges, of which only a very small percentage really is a mosquito. Mosquitos require a blood meal, most midges do not require it. Posted 3 years ago

"Trichocera annulata" is a species of winter crane fly, of the order Diptera. First described by German entomologist Johann Wilhelm Meigen in 1818, it is found in Europe and North America. In North America, it is known from Alaska south to California and in Newfoundland. It is an introduced species in New Zealand.
