Asp viper Back in 2015 the first asp viper I found in France, in Fontainebleau forest at the end of its northern repartition area where they are quite common. In the Herault department in Southern France where I am living now it is a real challenge to find them. Apparently only small, very localized populations are present, I did not find any yet ! "Vipera aspis" is a venomous viper species found in southwestern Europe. Bites from this species can be more severe than from the European adder, "V. berus"; not only can they be very painful, but also about 4% of all untreated bites are fatal. The specific epithet, "aspis", is a Greek word that means "viper."
