Spongy Moth - Lymantria dispar There&#039;s a lot going on in this photo -- there&#039;s the shed larval skin and empty pupa from the female (white) moth. The male is brown. Underneath the moths you can see the egg mass that she laid. Both moths were dead. They died after mating/egg laying. Such is the life of a gypsy moth. <br />

Lymantria dispar, the gypsy moth, are moths in the family Erebidae. Lymantria dispar covers many subspecies, subspecies identification such as L. d. dispar or L. d. japonica leaves no ambiguity in identification. Lymantria dispar subspecies have a range which covers in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.
