Leaf Beetle - Chrysolina banksii
In the UK this species is mostly found in coastal areas of the south, as far east as Hampshire, and south west with a few records in Essex and Kent.
This might therefore be the first recorded specimen in Sussex.
The typical habitat is grassland, heaths, dunes, woodland margins and salt marshes, with adults often found on their host plants, Black Horehound and Narrow-leaved Plantain.
Very similar to C. staphylaea, but larger.
Colouring can vary slightly but is generally a bronze/green with red legs, collar and antennae.
"Chrysolina bankii" is a species of leaf beetle native to western Europe and the western Mediterranean Basin. It has also been introduced to the East and West Coasts of the US, and are now expanding their range.
