Golden-tailed Sapphire HELP! I'm trying to identify this hummingbird - photographed at just over 2,300 metres in Merida state, Venezuela. The nearest I could get to identifying it was - Golden-tailed Sapphire, but not a match and at too great an altitude. Below other photos that I took. I understand that someone identified a Golden-tailed Sapphire here in December 2016 Andes,Chrysuronia oenone,Estancia La Bravera,Golden-tailed sapphire,Hummingbird,Merida,Venezuela Click/tap to enlarge

  1. I wish I could help but probably will get them wrong. I would recommend to kindly ask Thibaud:

    1. Thanks Ferdy, I'm fairly sure now that this may be the Golden-tailed Sapphire, as there's now a record of it at this site on ebird. Anyway I'll see if Thibaud can shed some light on the 2 hummers.. {;¬) Posted 3 years ago
      1. Hi David. I agree with Golden-tailed Sapphire. Nothing else I can that I know of with that rainbow-like progression from violet head, blue back, green rump, and down to the golden tail. 2300 masl is indeed high (I don't recall ever seeing it above 800 masl), but Birds of Peru has it occurring up to 1700 masl, and from there 2300 isn't that much of a stretch. Plus, there's still so much we don't know about the full altitudinal range of many species, I've seen many up to 1000 meters above the range given by my books! 1. Thanks Thibaud, That's pretty much what I thought as it's normal - Hilty has it at up to 1500m in Colombia, and it is in the range map of ebird with a record from Dec '16 too. Thanks again, I'll mark it as such. Cheers, David Posted 3 years ago
