Red Knot (Calidris canutus) Took this picture while visiting the archaeological sites of Phaselis. The original harbour was constructed in the 7th century BC. The ruins you can see now date from the 13th century. Apparently the emperor Hadrian visited the city in AD 129. ( he of wall fame). I am fairly sure this is a Green Sandpiper in non-breading plumage but happy to be corrected . 3. I'm pretty sure it's not a Green sandpiper. The bill is too short and the upperparts are too pale (compare with the Green Sandpiper photo on the right). I think it's a winter plumaged or immature Red Knot, with the greenish-yellow legs and nice cross-like pattern on the back.

The red knot is a medium sized shorebird which breeds in tundra and the Arctic Cordillera in the far north of Canada, Europe, and Russia. It is a large member of the "Calidris" sandpipers, second only to the great knot. Six subspecies are recognised.
