Red Knot (Calidris canutus)
Took this picture while visiting the archaeological sites of Phaselis. The original harbour was constructed in the 7th century BC. The ruins you can see now date from the 13th century. Apparently the emperor Hadrian visited the city in AD 129. ( he of wall fame). I am fairly sure this is a Green Sandpiper in non-breading plumage but happy to be corrected .
The red knot is a medium sized shorebird which breeds in tundra and the Arctic Cordillera in the far north of Canada, Europe, and Russia. It is a large member of the "Calidris" sandpipers, second only to the great knot. Six subspecies are recognised.
