Megaloblatta blaberoides, Finca Heimatlos, Ecuador
Concluding our Finca Heimatlos stay with one of the largest cockroaches in the world. This individual is probably around 8 cm, whereas its sibling Megaloblatta longipennis is formally recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest, usually being around 10 cm.
Sometimes, the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach is considered to be the largest, but this has been based on exceptionally large individuals, rather than their typical size. Yet others take the insect's weight or wingspan into account to determine the largest.
In any case, it's large! These species are not often seen as they typically forage high up in the canopy. In the below video you can get an idea of its size:

As you may recall from the travel report, there were two jumpy teenage girls standing around. Squeaking, doing the ewwwwwww thing, you know how it goes. Manuel and I were trying to explain how it's one of the cleanest animals on the planet, they're almost sterile. I like how the video above confirms how we're the nasty ones. Cockroaches absolutely do not want to be on us filthy animals lol. Posted 3 years ago
