  3. Are you sure it's not an Empress Brilliant? I associate that glittering yellow belly more with than species than with Green-crowned. Posted 3 years ago
    1. Hah, you're a life saver again. I'll tell you though how this one went wrong.

      It's in my notes as "?", so no ID given during the capture. Too hard to judge on a small camera screen. So I asked again before sharing it here and the advise was "try Green-crowned brilliant". So I go through lots of reference shots and indeed could make little sense of the belly, until I found one or two photos that do show it. I suppose those were incorrectly identified as well, but I didn't realize it. I figured it was just the angle of light creating the effect.

      Anyway, thanks for the correction.

The empress brilliant is a species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family. It is found in Colombia and Ecuador. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
