  1. Wow, any idea why they gather like this? Posted 3 years ago
    1. When I was still living in Spain I saw this most often happening when it rained as they tried to climb and stick to places away from the wet floor but why do they stay like that I am not sure.
      In this French web page:
      https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escargot
it mentions they also do that to protect themselves from heat:
<<Land snails are only active when the humidity is high enough. Otherwise, the animal retracts inside its shell, which it seals with a mucous veil (short inactivity) or with an epiphragm15, which prevents it from dehydrating. Some snails climb on a wall or on top of the grass stems to escape the furnace of the ground..>>
That make sense in the pic above as the ambient is near a saline and it can get really hot in this area.

"Theba pisana", common names white garden snail, sand hill snail, white Italian snail, Mediterranean coastal snail, or simply the Mediterranean snail, is an edible species of medium-sized, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Helicidae, the typical snails.
