Andean cock-of-the-rock, Angel Paz, Ecuador
The next location in our Ecuador trip is a daytime visit to "Refugio Paz de Las Aves". This is a private reserve famous for its antpittas. The owner was one of the first in the world to establish a relation of trust with these birds, allowing visitors a reasonable chance of seeing them.
As an appetizer, the beginning of the tour gives a view of a lek of Andean cock-of-the-rocks, but it's too remote for good closeups.

The Andean cock-of-the-rock is a medium-sized passerine bird of the Cotinga family native to Andean cloud forests in South America. It is widely regarded as the national bird of Peru. It has four subspecies and its closest relative is the Guianan cock-of-the-rock.
