Two female lions on Tarangire river bed during dry season During our former trip to South Africa we spotted zero big cats during the entire trip. Madagascar doesn't have any and after 2 days in Tanzania seeing none so far either, we were starting to believe in our own curse. Until in the very early morning on our second day in Tarangire a friendly neighbor pointed out these two lionesses at the Tarangire river banks. I intentionally did not crop this, you have to look closely to find them. Effectively, this is our first big cat spotting in the wild. The lion is one of the five big cats in the genus "Panthera" and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.
