Crested pigeon characterize by making a rapid trilling, whistling sound. In fact the bird produces this sound while in flight and the modified primary feathers contribute to this sound mechanism. The sound serves to to alert the flock of potential threats.

The crested pigeon is a bird found widely throughout mainland Australia except for the far northern tropical areas. Only two Australian pigeon species possess an erect crest, the crested pigeon and the spinifex pigeon. The crested pigeon is the larger of the two species.
