Eastern Hemlock - Tsuga canadensis This tree, and many like it, have had the outer bark pulled off by woodpeckers who are looking for the beetle larvae, probably hemlock borers (Buprestidae), that infest the tree. Borers can casuse eastern hemlocks to have reduced growth, foliar thinning, and yellowing.<br />

  1. Whoa, I first thought this was the natural look of the tree. Posted 3 years ago
    1. Isn't it wild?! The reddish color is the inner bark. You can see some holes in it, which I'm assuming are either peck holes from the woodpeckers or else holes made by beetle larvae. So many trees looked like this, so I'm guessing there is a real beetle problem. Eastern hemlocks have it rough. Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago
      1. It looks like what they call in Africa a "white man tree" :) Posted 3 years ago
        1. Hehe! Actually, I don't get it....because it's red? Or full of holes? Or has bugs? Posted 3 years ago

"Tsuga canadensis", also known as eastern hemlock or Canadian hemlock, and in the French-speaking regions of Canada as "Pruche du Canada", is a coniferous tree native to eastern North America. It is the state tree of Pennsylvania.
