House Rat - Rattus rattus Over time we had less pleasant visitors in our bird feeder so we had to unfortinately remove it. One rat is Ok but we were getting 4 or more. We renovated our terrace and removed feeders and we got rid of the problem.<br />
They seemed to be Rattus rattus and not norvegicus; big ears and eyes, very long tail (canot be seen here), ponty snout etc See differences here: <br />

  1. I actually have a terrible rodent phobia (reserved for ones that get into my living space it seems), but this is SO ADORABLE! Thank you for sharing! Posted 3 years ago
    1. Thanks! I also find rats cute and I had hamsters and a gerbil when I was a teenager. There are people who has rats as pets and they are very pretty and intelligent. These ones of course were wild and I would not dare to touch them, also for the obvious disease-carrying chance. If they would have promised me <<we will not have babies>> I would even have considered keeping them around but unfortunately one day you see 4 and the next they are 40 :-D
so we caught them and relocated them in a nature reserve where I hope they live happy ever after :-)

    1. Yes, me too! I hope they are happy in their more wild new home ;-) Posted 3 years ago
      1. They probably love it and have had many babies by now! Posted 3 years ago
        1. As long as they all stay out of people's houses I guess everybody is happy :-D Posted 3 years ago
          1. Definitely! I once had an albino pet rat -- my brother gave it to his girlfriend for Valentine's Day, lol. She didn't appreciate the gift and was going to set it "free", so I took it in. It was not friendly, but lived out its life well-cared for and in comfort, albeit in a cage. Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago

The black rat, also known as the roof rat, ship rat, or house rat, is a common long-tailed rodent of the stereotypical rat genus ''Rattus'', in the subfamily Murinae. It likely originated in the Indian subcontinent, but is now found worldwide.
