Can be recognized by a smooth, hygrophanous, burgundy-reddish, often umbonate cap, bright orange to reddish orange gills, and a bright purple KOH reaction on the tissue. As it ages, C. californicus loses its distinctive coloration, becoming dingy orange-brown overall.
