Caerostris bojani
I identified this species with the help of Matjaž Gregorič himself who discovered this species in 2015.
Here is C. bojani during its lunch late at night just in my garden in Antananarivo, Andoharanofotsy. This species waits all day long hiding wisely for insects to come in its web and when comes the night she becomes active. Caerostris is known to build giant web, and this one built her own web (about 3 meters long) between two banana trees.
This species can be identified by its color (light brown to dark brown) and the pattern on its opisthosoma which is circular, this one looks like an owl ! It is a female due to its length, a little bit less than 30mm. Indeed males are shorter that 20mm.

yeah, C. bojani used to build/repair their web very early in the morning after their lunch at night. during daylight they are an easy prey for birds if they stay in the center of their web. indeed, Caerostris use the wind/insect "highway" to help them to catch insect, that is why you might see them across rivers or between huge trees. and yeah, 3m web is really really impressive for a 3cm spider, it's like having a 170m plate for a 1,70m human.
(you can see here the limit of my camera, I use a 55mm. I'm looking into a better lens when I will go to France (Sigma lens 105 mm F2,8). It will allows me to have batter macro details. Sorry for the medium quality of this picture, it doesn't really show how beautiful is this species!) Posted 3 years ago
