  1. Sad. Do you find that hikers litter much in your area? I see little trash in the woods unless I am hiking in a popular place. In that case, there are always plastic bags, bits of food, balloons, socks, wipes, and masks. Posted 3 years ago
    1. Yes, we do see lots of rubbish left behind by hikers. Some hikers do picks them up, and post about them at local hiking groups, but it keeps happening.

Earlier this year, a Group of Scouts from an American International School camped at a location I goes to regularly. They didn't completely cleaned up when they left the following day despite their motto - Leave No Thrash. When I saw plastic bags that I knew with certainty and with photo evidences that belongs to them and posted to a local hiking Group, I was 'attacked' by their parents and the School and was threatened with lawsuit! ha ha! My saving grace was that they were camping illegally during Pandemic Lockdown and if they had proceeded with the lawsuit, they would directly admitting to breaking the law! :D

      1. Whaaat?! That's so horrible that they threatened to sue! Over what?? Very shameful.

I see the most trash when I hike at preserves that have children's programs. They leave garbage everywhere, mark trees, destroy vegetation, etc. The programs at these places are supposed to teach children about nature and to respect it, yet they simply trash it and let the kids run wild. None of the workers seem to care and let the kids act like hooligans. It makes me so mad. I have complained about it, but nothing ever changes. So, I avoid those places now. When I do see garbage in the woods, I pick it up and put it in a small trash bag that I keep in my backpack.

Littering makes no sense to me. Why not just carry the stuff back out with you and throw it away in one of the many trash cans that are available nearly everywhere, including at home? After all, they carried the stuff in, why suddenly toss it on the ground once you're finished with it? It makes no sense.
