Southern Darter(?) top view I am not entirely confident in this identification, as so many darters look like this. Do notice that its abdomen does not thicken at the end. Also, if you zoom in, you can see it has black and yellow striped legs. Common Darter,Heesch,Macro,Sympetrum striolatum Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

  1. This one is a female for sure, and females S. meridionale are usually in yellowish colors... Other overall markings, pterostigma, black markings in the abdomen, and adult colors suggest S. striolatum. A side view photo will help to reach final conclusions ;) Cheers* Posted 9 years ago
    1. Thanks so much. This one is 3 years old, I don't believe that I have a side view in this case, sorry. Posted 9 years ago
      1. No problem, Ferdy. The only thing for sure is that it doesn't corresponds to Sympetrum meridionale. Given it's distribution Sympetrum striolatum it is the best match. Cheers* Posted 9 years ago, modified 9 years ago
        1. Thank you. Note that you don't have to be this gentle. When you're convinced, you are free to directly edit the identifications. Posted 9 years ago

The Common Darter is a dragonfly of the family Libellulidae native to Eurasia. It is one of the most common dragonflies in Europe, occurring in a wide variety of water bodies, though with a preference for breeding in still water such as ponds and lakes. In the south of its range adults are on the wing all year round.
