Southern Darter (?) resting on trunk in sun, the Netherlands I am not entirely confident in this identification, as so many darters look like this. Do notice that its abdomen does not thicken at the end. Also, if you zoom in, you can see it has black and yellow striped legs. Common Darter,Heesch,Macro,Sympetrum striolatum Click/tap to enlarge

  1. Hi Ferdy! I believe this one is Sympetrum striolatum. Sympetrum meridionale has legs more yellow than black, almost no evident markings in the thorax, and no black markings at the edge of their abdomen. Cheers* Posted 9 years ago
    1. Thanks so much for the correction. I'm really terrible with Odonata identification so you should be suspicious about my identifications in that area :) Posted 9 years ago

The Common Darter is a dragonfly of the family Libellulidae native to Eurasia. It is one of the most common dragonflies in Europe, occurring in a wide variety of water bodies, though with a preference for breeding in still water such as ponds and lakes. In the south of its range adults are on the wing all year round.
