Vespula germanica I find wasps very photogenic. I love the yellow contrast against the black and those dark mysterious eyes. This one was doing something on a snail shell, maybe feeding itself? Fall,Geotagged,German wasp,Portugal,Vespula germânica, macro, wasp Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

  1. I agree! I got stung 17 times by wasps last month, but still find them beautiful. Great photo! Posted 6 months ago
    1. 17 times?! :-0
They only sting when they feel threatened, right?

      1. Yes, usually. But, they can be more aggressive in autumn, especially if you get close to their nest. I was walking in the woods and suddenly got attacked -- I think I must have been near their nest (in the ground). I didn't see any wasps beforehand though, so it definitely took me by surprise. 1. I've been photographing in one place that I see some wasps around...I will try to spot their nest to keep a secure distance :-P Posted 6 months ago
          1. One of the other JungleDragon moderators (Lisa Kimmerling) has had a couple encounters with being stung by wasps in the woods, but this was a first for me. I have spent practically my entire life in the woods and have never seen wasps or a ground-dwelling wasp's nest. I've only ever been stung a couple times until now. So, hopefully this was unusual and you never have an issue where you live. Posted 6 months ago
