Twin-spot Centurion (Sargus bipunctatus)
This is the largest Soldier fly in the UK , with a wing length of approx.10mm.
The male, (seen here) is narrowly built with a metallic green thorax and metallic bronze abdomen.
Females are broader built with an extensively reddish underside to the abdomen and a blackish tip bearing blue reflections.
Both sexes have orange legs and a pair of whitish spots on the frons just above the antennae, which gives them their 'Twin-spot' name.
Compared to other Soldier flies, it has a late flight period between August and November and can sometimes be seen sunbathing on a variety of vegetation.
