Long Hoverfly (Sphaerophoria scripta) I was fascinated to catch sight of these two attempting to mate in mid-air in quite blustery winds, but fortunately for me they quickly decided to settle on vegetation instead.
What followed caught me by surprise but was, as I later had confirmed for me, not unusual behaviour for this species.
I'd call it the Dance of the Long Hoverfly. The smaller female might call it something else entirely.
Long Hoverfly (Sphaerophoria scripta)

I was fascinated to catch sight of these two attempting to mate in mid-air in quite blustery winds, but fortunately for me they quickly decided to settle on vegetation instead.

What followed caught me by surprise but was, as I later had confirmed for me, not unusual behaviour for this species.

I'd call it the Dance of the Long Hoverfly. The smaller female might call it something else entirely.
