  1. I'm back!

I'll have more pelagic photos (and more) to upload soon, from my last trip to the Canaries, but I gotta finish this batch first!

I am in absolute awe of tubenoses (Procellariiforms, i.e. petrels, shearwaters, storm-petrels, and albatrosses). These birds literally have entire oceans as their playgrounds. This fellow, which I saw off the coast of France, breeds in Patagonia!

    1. Good to see you back, and with another great photo! Can't wait to see what more you have.
Quite incredible how far some birds migrate, it's astonishing.

      1. Thanks Claire! Did you ever go on a pelagic birding trip out of Cape Town? It was where I fell in love with pelagics! Posted 3 years ago
        1. No, but I wish I had. Still, moving to North Wales soon, so hopefully get over to Anglesey during breeding season! Posted 3 years ago
          1. Excellent! That means puffins!!!! (I've seen them at sea a couple times, but never had the pleasure of visiting a colony) Posted 3 years ago

The sooty shearwater is a medium-large shearwater in the seabird family Procellariidae. ''Ardenna'' was first used to refer to a seabird by Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi in 1603, and ''grisea'' is medieval Latin for "grey".
