The sooty shearwater is a medium-large shearwater in the seabird family Procellariidae. ''Ardenna'' was first used to refer to a seabird by Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi in 1603, and ''grisea'' is medieval Latin for "grey".

I am in absolute awe of tubenoses (Procellariiforms, i.e. petrels, shearwaters, storm-petrels, and albatrosses). These birds literally have entire oceans as their playgrounds. This fellow, which I saw off the coast of France, breeds in Patagonia! Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago
