  1. Great species intro! Looks very similar to some other butterfly species, any hints on how to uniquely identify this one? Posted 11 years ago
    1. Good question! The fun part when identifying butterflies is that there are a few groups of several genera which are so much similar that I can easily spend a couple of hours comparing them and still not be sure about the ID :)
Sometimes you just need some luck and a sharp eye - it's all about the spots - number, size, shape. You also need to have the right side of the wings, preferably both.
I was searching among the Euchloe species when I found this photo

It's easier to see the difference here when they are side by side. The Euchloe is more yellowish.

Most Pontia species have different shapes of the spots except for Pontia edusa which is nearly identical to Pontia daplidice. They cannot be distinguished from photos. Some scientists still consider them being one species - Pieris daplidice (Linnaeus, 1758).

      1. I admire your persistence! And even more so I admire that you use it to contribute to JungleDragon! Posted 11 years ago
        1. Sometimes they say I have too much of it :)
This is not the best shot, but you can see the black spot on the forewing.

The Bath White is a small butterfly of the family "Pieridae", the Yellows and Whites, which occurs in the Palearctic region. It is common in central and southern Europe, migrating northwards every summer, often reaching southern Scandinavia and sometimes southern England.
