Vernal Shieldbug (Peribalus strictus) - Final instar I am reposting this photograph as a correction to my original post identifying this species as a Gorse Shieldbug (Piezodorus lituratus) having been corrected and having carried out further research.
The best bit, is this is described as a "very rare" immigrant to the UK, on the southern-most coast only, which shows signs of colonisation.

This 5th instar in my garden suggests that colonisation is taking place.
Vernal Shieldbug (Peribalus strictus) - Final instar

I am reposting this photograph as a correction to my original post identifying this species as a Gorse Shieldbug (Piezodorus lituratus) having been corrected and having carried out further research.

The best bit, is this is described as a "very rare" immigrant to the UK, on the southern-most coast only, which shows signs of colonisation.

This 5th instar in my garden suggests that colonisation is taking place.

I found two specimens.

  1. Fantastic to have it corrected and to find that it is a rare species! I deleted the original photo since you have re-uploaded it here with the corrected ID. Posted 3 years ago
    1. Wise move, because my plan to leave it in place for comparison made no sense whatsoever! Posted 3 years ago
