The Tests or Shells of the Eccentric Sand Dollar. Unfortunately this June we experienced what they called a “heat dome”. Temperatures reached nearly 40°C with no clouds. It also occurred when the lowest tides of the year happened right at noon. These events triggered the loss of much intertidal marine life including the Eccentric sand dollar. Large aggregations were exposed during the low tides and were subsequently killed. Canada,Dendraster excentricus,Eccentric Sand Dollar,Geotagged,Summer Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

  1. Whoa! That's terrible. Posted 3 years ago
    1. Yes, quite the disaster for sure. It will be interesting to see if all the mussels, barnacles, sand dollars and other sessile forms of intertidal life bounces back. Posted 3 years ago
    2. Hello Christine, forgot to mention that a few days after the hottest days (and nights) there was a sickening odour of rotting flesh. Out of ignorance people including ourselves started searching their properties for some rotting animal. Of course it was the decaying intertidal organisms. Never happened before. Posted 3 years ago
      1. Oh wow. That is so horrible and tragic. I feel awful that I hadn't heard about this. I was just reading now that temperatures of 125F were recorded in the tide pools! The article stated that "billions of mussels, clams, oysters, barnacles, sea stars, and other intertidal species died during the late-June heat wave." Billions. Boiled alive.

Nature is resilient. I hope it can rebound.

  2. Terrible, you should parcel some up and send to the climate change deniers! Tragic! Posted 3 years ago
    1. Ha! Don’t know if I’d have enough shells! Posted 3 years ago
