Caribbean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) A Caribbean Flamingo I saw on the west coast of Trinidad a couple days ago. This was my first wild encounter with flamingos which I was really grateful for. Surprisingly enough, instead of running away from me, they kept coming closer and closer. I also attempted to photograph them in flight, however, my autofocus struggled and instead focused on the plovers that were around. The American Flamingo is a large species of flamingo closely related to the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo. It was formerly considered conspecific with the Greater Flamingo, but that treatment is now widely viewed as incorrect due to a lack of evidence. It is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America.
